Ergo players who want to move up must move their joystick down, and vice versa. Because in a plane or a space fighter or whatever, pulling “back” on the controls pulls the nose up, which means you’re pressing “down” on a joystick to make the ship go “up” which can be disorienting for some people. This control scheme is particularly common in airplane simulators like the ever popular microsoft flight simulator , since it's a more accurate representation of how these airplanes fly in real life.
